Welcome!
Welcome to the first issue of the Adventist College Connections. As a parent of two high school juniors, I am in the middle of supporting my children in the college search process. One of the biggest challenges for me is how to pay for two students entering college at the same time. Their college years have crept up on me, and I’m not as prepared financially as I’d hoped to be. Even though God says not to worry, I find myself thinking about this responsibility a lot. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed.
But then I remind myself of something I’ve seen with my own eyes. After attending Southern Adventist University, graduating from Southwestern Adventist University, teaching at both Walla Walla University and Union College, and recently completing five years leading the enrollment and student financial services offices at Union College, I’ve seen more financial miracles than I can count or remember.
In one situation, a complete stranger heard a student needed help and showed up at the cashier’s window and wrote a check. In another, a student who was a ward of the court, meaning she did not have any parents to help her financially, graduated with a credit on her account. Another student funded her entire first year using mostly scholarships she found on her own. I’ve even seen students give money to help another student struggling financially.
These stories give me hope, and remind me that God will provide. He may do it through grants or scholarships or extra income, but it’s important to remember that He is my source, not the government or an institution or my employer. My job is to trust Him and step out in faith. Even if I don’t know where all the money will come from, I feel confident He will supply all I need. I’ve seen Him do it many times.
